    To find the best books on the history of Philosophy, we must first identify the level of the student. I will answer for the beginner and for the advanced student. 1. For the beginner, perhaps the best book is by a world-class World Historian, name.   Book Pre-order: Surya Siddanta: Emergence of empirical reality As I have been writing in the various blogs about Surya Siddanta, I find that this literature is definitely not about astronomy. The context of translation of this literature needs to be “the emergence of this empirical reality from the truth”.

    The ancient Indian philosophy is a fusion of two ancient traditions: the Vedic tradition and the Sramana tradition. Vedic philosophy [ edit ] Indian philosophy begins with the Vedas wherein questions pertaining to laws of nature, the origin of the universe and the place of man in it are asked.   But according to Pierre Hadot, author of Philosophy as a Way of Life, philosophy was seen in a very different way in the ancient world to the way it is perceived today. It was characterised, he said, by two formulas: learning to live and learning to die. In other words, it was eminently practical, on the one hand and metaphysical on the other.

    A good introductory book to start with is "The Elements of Moral Philosophy" by James Rachels.
